The Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday expressed strong protest to Romania in connection with the ban by Bucharest authorities on the entry of a Russian passenger plane carrying Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin into the Romanian airspace.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Romanian authorities did not allow earlier on Friday a scheduled passenger plane, in which Rogozin flew to Chisinau as a passenger, to cross the Romanian airspace, citing the fact that the Russian official was on sanctions list. The plane had to change course and land in Minsk.

According to the deputy prime minister himself, the decision of the Romanian authorities was a "demarche to the Moldovan president."

"In Moscow, this incident is viewed as a conscious provocation, which seriously damages bilateral relations," the ministry said in a protest note handed to Romanian acting Chargé d'affaires in Russia.

The ministry also urged the Romanian authorities "to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and to provide the Russian side with relevant explanations."

On Wednesday, Moldovan President Igor Dodon said that Rogozin had confirmed his plans to visit Moldova despite proposals of country's authorities to cancel the visit as the delegation had reportedly planned to arrive in the European nation using the aircraft of Russia's Aerospace Forces.

Dodon criticized his government over the possible cancellation of Rogozin's visit as an unfriendly move.

The incident with Rogozin's flight to Moldova was not the only one involving Russian citizens that took place during the week. On Thursday, Moldovan authorities banned a group of Russians, including those heading to Transnistria to participate in the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the peacekeeping mission in the region, from visiting the country.
