US President Donald Trump intends to nominate John Bass as the new Ambassador to Afghanistan, according to the White House.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US President Donald Trump intends to nominate John Bass as the new Ambassador to Afghanistan, the White House said in a press release.

"President Donald J. Trump today announced his intent to nominate John R. Bass of New York to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," the release said on Thursday. "He is currently Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey, a position he has held since 2014."

Bass was the Ambassador to the Republic of Georgia from 2009 to 2012 and has devoted his time to supporting US government efforts to mobilize allies and resources to combat terrorism and instability in Iraq, Syria, and Southwest Asia, the release added.
