"[The] Attorney General should not be forced to resign for doing the right thing — following ethical rules and upholding the rule of law — especially if he will be replaced by a politically compliant lackey handpicked by President [Donald] Trump," the release stated on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Trump told The New York Times that he would have never selected Sessions for the job if he knew the nominee would recuse himself from overseeing the Justice Department’s Russia probe.
Blumenthal underlined that Trump's comments raise a bigger issue of the rule of law in the United States. The senator warned the president could potentially try to meddle in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Blumenthal noted these attempts would be "inappropriate and potentially illegal."
In March, Sessions recused himself from the probe into President Donald Trump's connections with Moscow after the Washington Post reported that he held two meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, despite denying contacts with Kremlin officials at his confirmation hearing.
