Cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Russia on protecting data flows should be improved, the European Parliament’s Rapporteur for the General Data Protection Regulation told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON(Sputnik) — When asked about the current level of collaboration between the EU and Russia on data protection, Jan Philipp Albrecht on Wednesday stated, "I am sure it should be enhanced."

"There should be more common roots on data protection between the European Union and Russia, in particular, to safeguard that there is no undermining of the right to privacy and data protection," Albrecht added.

The parliamentarian pointed out that there is no adequacy decision for Russia that would ensure an adequate level of protection by domestic law or international commitments.

"So, if companies would like to transfer data from the European Union to Russia, they would have to do contractual clauses with the data protection authorities to make sure that safeguards are in place," Albrecht explained.

Albrecht is visiting Washington, DC, where he holds meetings with the US administration, lawmakers and civil society members.
