US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer will announce in the near future the results of the first round of talks on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Sanders explained the Trump administration remains focused on providing relief for the US manufacturing industry, which has been particularly hurt by the existing NAFTA deal.

"USTR will be making announcement soon on the first round of negotiations as we work towards NAFTA that benefits all Americans," Sanders stated.

The Trump team aims to address the US trade imbalances in North America, expanding market access for agricultural firms and strengthening labor agreements.

On Monday, Lighthizer released the detailed summary of the US objectives ahead of the expected start of the NAFTA negotiations. Lighthizer noted the talks would not start before August 16.
