Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov reaffirmed on Monday at a meeting with representatives of eastern authorities in Libya Russia's continuing support of efforts aimed at resolving the protracted political crisis in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Bogdanov met in Moscow with several eastern Libya officials, including eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar.

"The Russian side reaffirmed its strong support of the political process, based on the imperative to ensure the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya," the ministry said in statement.

Libya has been torn apart by internal conflict since 2011, when the civil war broke out culminating in the demise of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

In December 2015, the United Nations brokered the agreement to establish the Government of National Accord (GNA), which was meant to reconcile Libya’s rival governments — the Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress. The GNA's Presidential Council was supposed to offer representation to members of Libya's conflicting groups, but the GNA has been struggling to make progress in truly uniting the country.

In February, Fayez Seraj, the chairman of the UN-backed Tripoli government, and Haftar agreed to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in 2018.
