Pakistan is looking forward to engagement with officials of the new US administration after official nominations take place for contacts and exchanges, Sartaj Aziz, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's adviser on foreign affairs, told Sputnik on Monday.

KARACHI (Sputnik) – "We look forward to a constructive engagement after the US officials' nominations will be approved. We will establish contacts with them and some exchanges will take place," Aziz added.

According to the official, Sharif and US President Donald Trump had "a very warm exchange on the telephone" and Washington and Islamabad "express their readiness to develop relationship, especially, in the common issues involved, specially, on terrorism."

"We have a lot of common interests. One of them is Afghanistan, counterterrorism and trade. We are looking forward but the visit of the Prime Minister is not yet scheduled. I am sure that over the course of 2017 there will be an opportunity for the Prime Minister to visit the United States," Aziz said.

Trump spoke with Sharif on the phone in late November. According to media reports, Trump called Sharif a "terrific guy," while the Trump transition team said that the conversation on how Washington and Islamabad would maintain a strong relationship was productive.
