US, South Korea to Hold Extended Deterrence Strategy Meeting on Tuesday

The United States and South Korea will hold bilateral extended deterrence strategy approach and consultation group meeting on Tuesday, the US Department of State announced in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The sides will discuss ways to strengthen extended deterrence and efforts to improve the alliance’s comprehensive deterrence posture, according to a release.

"The United States and the Republic of Korea will hold the bilateral Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG) on December 20 in Washington, DC," the statement said on Monday.

The United States and South Korea agreed to extend their deterrence approach to North Korea in October.

In addition, the two countries agreed to work on introducing a new UN Security Council resolution on North Korea and tightening sanctions on Pyongyang.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula escalated in September after North Korea claimed to have successfully exploded a nuclear warhead. Pyongyang reported it had detonated a hydrogen bomb in January.
