UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the draft resolution on monitoring evacuations of civilians from Aleppo, which has recently been liberated from jihadists by the Syrian army.
"We have on the ground a bit more than a hundred UN staff. Those are mostly…Syrian nationals who continue to work in the country," Dujarric told reporters. "They could start quickly. Obviously, we are looking at the modalities of exactly how to implement the resolution."
He added that UN staff members based in Syria’s capital, Damascus, could be moved to Aleppo on "fairly quick notice" if needed. The spokesman also reiterated UN concerns about ensuring safe access for international humanitarian monitors in Aleppo.
As of 3:45 p.m. local time Monday (13:45 GMT), more than 100 buses carrying thousands of men, women and children had left "besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo," with evacuations likely to continue in coming hours, Dujarric said.
Earlier in the day, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution requiring the monitoring of evacuations from Aleppo, which forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad recently seized from anti-government rebels. The Council vote resulted from extensive consultations Sunday to reach a compromise between French and Russian proposals on the matter.
