YEREVAN (Sputnik) — Armenia and the European Union have made considerable progress in the negotiations on a new cooperation agreement, the Armenian Minister of Economic Development and Investments said Friday.

"The fifth round of negotiations on the trade and investment part of the agreement, which took place in recent days in Brussels, allowed to achieve significant progress and make visible the conclusion of negotiations in the near future," Suren Karayan said during the talks with European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom held earlier in the day as quoted in the press release issued by the ministry.

In late 2015, the European Union and Armenia started negotiations on a new framework agreement for the development of bilateral relations.

Yerevan planned to sign a free trade agreement with the European Union back in 2013, but shortly before the deal was signed, Armenia announced its intention to join the Eurasian Customs Union, the plans fulfilled in January 2015.
