KIEV (Sputnik) — He added that following the detention, the court would have to select a preventive punishment for the former president within 36 hours. The court ruling expires on June 14, 2017.

“Kiev’s Pechersky district court, after examining in a closed court hearing an application of military prosecutor [Ruslan] Kravchenko … ruled to grant the request and provide permission to arrest of suspect Yanukovych,” Lutsenko posted on his Facebook page.

In February 2014, violent clashes with law enforcement officials broke out in the square, claiming the lives of some 100 civilians. The current Ukrainian authorities blame Yanukovych and the Berkut special forces for the deaths on Maidan.
