French Call for UNSC Meeting on Syria Attempt to Distract Attention From Mosul

According to the Russian Envoy to the UN, the French call for an emergency Security Council meeting on Syria is an attempt to distract attention from the operation in Mosul.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The French call for an emergency Security Council meeting on Syria is an attempt to distract attention from the operation in the Iraqi city of Mosul, where the situation is “more dramatic” than in Aleppo, Russian Envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin said after Security Council consultations on Tuesday.

“There’s also another side motive to distract the attention from what is going on in Mosul, which in many respects is much more dramatic than the situation in eastern Aleppo, which, with all the gravity of any situation where you have fighting going on, has some indication of improvement,” Churkin told reporters.

Moreover, Moscow will not support the draft resolution on chemical weapons sanctions that the United Kingdom and France plan to introduce at the UN Security Council because of the lack of evidence, Churkin added.

"We wouldn’t support any action of it," Churkin said after Security Council consultations. "At this point, there’s not enough material proof to do anything about it."
