Trump Unlikely to Contribute to US-Cuba Reconciliation – Ex-Ambassador to Cuba
14:33 GMT 27.11.2016 (Updated: 11:24 GMT 06.08.2022) The United States is unlikely to change its negative perception of Cuba after Donald Trump is sworn in as US president, Germany’s former ambassador to Cuba Bernd Wulffen told Sputnik.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Cuba’s ex-President Fidel Castro died Friday at the age of 90, shocking the nation and prompting celebrations among Cuban exiles in Florida. Reacting to the news, Trump slammed the iconic revolutionary for being "a brutal dictator" and promised his administration would help Cuba.
"After Fidel Castro’s death and the announced retirement of his brother Raul in 2018 a younger generation will come to power in Cuba. It will mostly depend on the West to promote new thinking and new initiatives in Cuba and help it in its transition to a market economy and eventually to democracy. The US will hopefully no longer regard Cuba as an enemy. But a possibility of this happening under the new president in Washington is questionable," Wulffen wrote.

Under outgoing President Barack Obama, Washington
restored diplomatic relations with Cuba in July 2015, despite continuing to have serious disagreements on the issue of human rights. In his comment on Fidel Castro's death, Obama urged to let bygones be bygones.
Wulffen, who met Fidel Castro several times during his tenure as ambassador to the tiny Caribbean nation in 2001-2005, described the late Communist leader as a "giant of the past century" who restored Cuba’s sovereignty and dignity and greatly improved education and healthcare. The West criticized him for keeping the opposition in line.
