Outgoing US President Barack Obama promised to give Donald Trump some space when he leaves the White House but did not rule out he might occasionally step in to set him straight on US values and ideals.

LIMA (Sputnik) — Trump is expected to be sworn in as the new president of the United States on January 20. His transitional team has been busy filling in posts in the administration-in-waiting.

"If there are issues that … go to core questions about our values and our ideals and if I think that it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, then I’ll examine it when it comes," Obama told reporters in Lima.

Obama said he wanted to be respectful to Trump and recalled that George W. Bush "could not have been more gracious to me when I came in."

"I want to be respectful of the office and give the president-elect an opportunity to put forward his platform without somebody popping off in every instance," he said, adding his plan for the next two months was to "just finish my job" and take his wife and children on a vacation.
