MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The border will remain closed through Sunday when Haitians go to the polls again to elect a president after last year’s vote was annulled.
Haiti’s Interior Ministry explained the decision to shut the border was made to guarantee security and better control of the electoral process.
The nation last held a presidential election in October 2015, but the result triggered accusations of fraud and was voided. Another poll was scheduled to take place last month but was postponed after Hurricane Matthew ripped through the country, killing 573 people.
This time, there will be 27 presidential contenders to choose from, with a runoff due in January if neither of them gets 50 percent of votes. Haitians will also cast ballots in the second round of parliamentary polls.
