UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem are going to discuss the situation in Syria – particularly, in Aleppo, during de Mistura's official visit to Damascus.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura is going to visit Damascus on Sunday where he will meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, a source told Sputnik.

The source said that de Mistura and Muallem were going to discuss the situation in Syria – particularly, in Aleppo.

Syria's civil war between government forces and a wide range of insurgents, including opposition groups and terrorists, such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, both outlawed in Russia, has raged for some five years and has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Over recent months, Aleppo has been a battlefield between government forces, jihadists, and numerous opposition groups. Militant-held eastern Aleppo is encircled by government forces and the fighting has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.
