Moscow welcomes the outcome of the presidential election in Moldova and hopes that President-elect Igor Dodon fulfills his campaign pledge to retain the country's nonaligned status, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moldova's Central Elections Commission said Monday that Socialist Party leader Dodon secured 52.12 percent of votes in the second round of the presidential election.

"Moscow welcomes the results of national presidential elections held in a free and competitive atmosphere in the Republic of Moldova," the ministry said in a statement.

"We hope that Dodon's campaign promises to contribute to the strengthening of statehood and sovereignty, interethnic harmony, non-aligned status, the achievement of economic stability will be realized," the ministry added.
