The EU Foreign Ministers called on Monday on Iran to exert influence on the Syrian authorities to halt atrocities, as well as to take part in conflict resolution process.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — It also called on Iran to contribute to "laying the ground for the resumption of an inclusive and Syrian-led political process under UN auspices."

"The Council urges Iran to use its influence on the Syrian regime to end the violence against civilian populations, humanitarian personnel and civilian and humanitarian infrastructures, enable full unhindered country-wide humanitarian access and engage constructively in a negotiated political process," an official European Council statement said.

Syria's civil war between government forces and a wide range of insurgents, including opposition groups and terrorists, such Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, both outlawed in Russia, has raged for some five years and has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
