"Donald Trump should clarify the side he stands on — whether he stands on the side of truth, world order and democracy, or whether he is busy establishing a kind of men’s friendship," von der Leyen told the local ZDF television channel on Thursday.
According to von der Leyen, Moscow and the Western states have contrasting perceptions of such important matters as the reunification of Crimea with Russia and bombings of the Syrian city of Aleppo.
Von der Leyen stressed that NATO was not a business initiative and warned Trump not to treat it that way.
Over the course of his election campaign, Trump repeatedly backed review of Washington’s relations with its NATO allies and expressed support for the idea that they should pay a fair price for the United States providing their security.
On Tuesday, Trump won the 2016 election with 290 electoral votes, while his rival Hillary Clinton received 232 votes despite winning the popular vote by a margin of some 200,000.
