Mexican Leader, Donald Trump to Discuss 'New Agenda' Following US Election

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto says he has talked with Donald Trump, who won the Tuesday US presidential election, over the phone and the two have agreed to meet soon.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Nieto told reporters on Wednesday, as quoted by El Pais, that his conversation with Trump was "respectful" and that they wanted to preferably meet "during the transition period" to discuss a "new agenda."

Earlier on Wednesday, the Mexican leader congratulated the United States on the conclusion of the elections, saying on Twitter that Mexico and the United States are "friends, partners and allies."

​In announcing his presidential bid on June 16, Trump said illegal immigrants from Mexico bring mostly drugs and crime to the United States, and characterized Mexican immigrants as rapists. He has repeatedly vowed to build a wall between Mexico and the United States, saying the former would pay for the construction.

Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu insisted on Wednesday that his country would not pay for the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Trump gained well above the 270 electoral votes needed for a victory in the Tuesday elections, surpassing his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
