"We highly expect and wish the victory by Mr. Trump — for us, for Europe… If Marine Le Pen wins the presidential elections, I'm sure we [US and France] will have better relations and partnership," the lawmaker said, adding that it could result in "the beginning of the multipolar world."
Schaffhauser, who is a member of Europe of Nations and Freedom Group in the European Parliament, which is dominated by FN members, also noted that Trump voters mainly come from the middle class disillusioned with the policies of the ruling Democrats.
"Somehow there is a correspondence between people who vote for FN and electorate that vote for Trump," he suggested.
The US presidential elections are set be held on November 8. Trump and his Democratic Party rival Hillary Clinton are the main candidates for the post. According to a Friday poll by Los Angeles Times/USC, Trump is running ahead of Clinton by five percent.
In France, the presidential elections are set for April and May, with polls consistently showing that Le Pen will probably win the first round, though it is yet unclear whom she will face as the ruling Socialists and the right-wing Republicans are yet to choose their nominees during the forthcoming primaries.
