MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Speaking about the outlooks for Germany’s relations with the United Kingdom after its EU pullout, Steinmeier said he hoped the two nations would maintain their close partnership and work together to address conflicts and crises worldwide.
"Preconditions for talks must be created as soon as possible. No one will benefit from a ‘cliffhanger’," Steinmeier was quoted by his ministry's press service as saying at a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.
England’s High Court ruled Thursday the UK government needed parliamentary approval to trigger Article 50 of EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which would initiate UK’s talks with Brussels on the terms of its exit.
The government vowed to appeal the judgment at the Supreme Court, with the case expected to be heard in early December. This raised concerns that London’s plan to formally notify Brussels of its decision by the end of next March could be derailed.
