MOSCOW, November 4 (Sputnik) — The Paris climate deal was signed last December and came into effect earlier today after being ratified by over 55 nations responsible for 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
"We, the people of France, can be proud of the mission we’ve accomplished. We brokered a deal among key world powers and helped it become law through ratification," Hollande said.
President Hollande stressed it took only 11 months for the pact to become a law. It took the United Nations 11 years to ratify the previous Kyoto Protocol.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit the global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. France has pledged to cut its carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
