"Political climate of the US debates is so bad that I am afraid that it may spread to other states and cultures. Belligerent to women and purely sexist statements, which come from [Republican candidate Donald] Trump, are not acceptable and not worthy for a person striving to become a US president. This gives cause for concern," Wallstroem said, as quoted by the Dagens nyheter newspaper,
The minister also stressed that she regards the US debates as "disincentive and dangerous."
Wallstroem added that the atmosphere of the debates has resulted in politicization of the media coverage of the candidates’ electoral campaigns, which contradicts the spirit of democracy.
Wallstroem expressed hope that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton would win the elections, but stressed that it was hardly possible to forecast the results of the elections.
The US presidential elections will take place on November 8.
