If Kiev persisted in refusing to meet the terms of the Minsk agreements, Donald Trump would probably tell Ukrainian authorities: “I’m sorry, this has gone on long enough… if you don’t go along with it, you are on your own, buddy.”

Trump 'Will Do Everything He Can' to Achieve Better US-Russia Relations
WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Michael Hughes — US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump if elected would no longer support Kiev if it failed to meet its commitments under the Minsk accord such as affording local autonomy to the people of eastern Ukraine, US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher told Sputnik.

“The Ukrainians refuse to permit the federal type structure of having provincial and state governments get elected [and] run their local schools and police [in eastern Ukraine],” Rohrabacher said. “And the Ukrainians are not going to do that until they are compelled to do so.”

If Kiev persists in refusing to meet the terms of the Minsk agreements, the congressman added, Trump will probably tell Ukrainian authorities: “I’m sorry, this has gone on long enough… if you don’t go along with it, you are on your own, buddy.”

Trump would also likely work closely with the Russians on negotiating a more “enforceable” agreement that Moscow would likely adhere to because it is in their best interests, albeit Kiev is also likely to resist.

The Minsk agreements call for Kiev to afford local autonomy in eastern Ukraine, including a special status to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. The deal also stipulates a full ceasefire, withdrawing weapons from the line of contact, and all-for-all prisoner exchange.

In April 2014, Kiev authorities launched a military operation against independence supporters in Donbass. In February 2015, the two sides reached a ceasefire deal after talks brokered by the leaders of Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine — the so-called Normandy Format — in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
