MOSCOW (Sputnik) Once elected, the new president of the United States will be responsible for building a dialogue with Moscow to help improve international security, president of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and former Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said.

"Whoever wins [the US election], will have to face the harsh reality. The reality is that Russia and the United States, if they are not preparing to self-destruct, must build a pragmatic dialogue, as this dialogue will be responsible not only for their own well-being, but also for the security of the world as a whole," Ivanov told RIA Novosti.

According to him, the United States, "whether you like it or not, remains a major world power." Therefore, the future leader of the United States will be responsible not only for the situation in the United States but in the entire world.

"I have always held the view that we should be able to work with the US administration that is in power. I still think so," the former foreign minister stated.

He refrained from making predictions about who will become the new president, but said that the campaign "is being carried out with unprecedented fury, using all acceptable and unacceptable techniques." He added that, because of this, "until the very last day, you can expect surprises from both sides, which may affect the election results."

The United States presidential election will be held on November 8. The main contenders for the post of the new head of the US administration are Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
