US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone and stressed the importance of continued multilateral talks in Geneva to resolve the situation in Syria.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Monday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said Kerry and Lavrov agreed to continue looking for ways to resolve the situation in Aleppo.

"They talked about the importance of the continued multilateral discussions in Geneva and how to try to continue to find a way to get a meaningful cessation of hostilities and the delivery of humanitarian aid," Department of State spokesperson John Kirby said in a press briefing on Monday.

Last Thursday, Russia instituted a humanitarian pause in Aleppo to ensure the safe evacuation of unarmed militants, as well as civilians from the city’s eastern districts through designated corridors. The pause ended on Saturday.

Following the suspension of cooperation between the United States and Russia after a cessation of hostilities failed last month, the State Department said the two countries would continue to engage in multilateral discussions, including with other members of the International Syria Support Group in Geneva.
