Gulf States Launch Military Operation in Yemen (442)

Special UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, on behalf of the UN, has presented the parties to the Yemeni conflict with a proposal for a crisis settlement, a source from the Houthi delegation and General National Congress, the former president's party told Sputnik.

SANAA (Sputnik) — The source added that Ould Cheikh Ahmed handed a copy of the proposal to the government delegation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

"The UN special envoy has submitted a proposal, which is to be the basis for discussions at the negotiating table," the source said on Monday.

A ceasefire in Yemen started in the early hours of October 20 and lasted for 72 hours.

On Saturday, the UN special envoy urged all parties in the conflict to extend the 72 hour cessation of hostilities for another three days.

The situation in Yemen remains extremely unstable since the start of a military conflict in 2014 between the government forces headed by Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthi rebels, supported by an army faction loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
