Iraq has summoned the Turkish ambassador to the country over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's earlier remarks about Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Abadi during his speech at the ninth Eurasian Islamic Council in Istanbul on Tuesday. Erdogan said Abadi should "know his limits" and that the Turkish army present on the Iraqi territory would not take orders from Abadi.

Sultan-Like Self-Importance: 'No One Can Object to Turkish Presence in Iraq'
Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Faruk Kaymakci was summoned by Iraqi authorities in Baghdad and given a note of formal protest over Erdogan's comments, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said as cited by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The Turkish president's remarks were branded as irresponsible by the Iraqi prime minister's office, which said that Iraq considers further talks on Turkish military presence in Iraq unfeasible after the incident.

On October 4, the Iraqi parliament adopted a resolution voicing a protest against Turkish military presence in the town of Bashiqa, located about 19 miles northeast of Mosul. The lawmakers demanded that the Iraqi authorities take necessary legal and diplomatic measures, including a review of the economic relations between the two countries. Ankara condemned the resolution.

On Thursday, Iraq requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the presence of the Turkish troops on the territory of northern Iraq.
