The support of Syrian president Bashar Assad is unacceptable, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said.

ROME (Sputnik) — In September, Russia and the United States brokered a peace deal with a ceasefire in Aleppo that came into force on September 12. Following the seeming dissolution of the ceasefire due to reported violations from both sides, government forces began a major offensive on rebel-held districts of the city, which raised concerns among many international organizations and national governments.

"It seems like Assad decided to destroy part of Aleppo, and the support of that is unacceptable," Gentiloni said Wednesday at a press conference following the meeting with his French and German counterparts in Rome.

Gentiloni, who invited German Foreign Minister Franck-Walter Steinmeier and French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault to Rome, added that the conflict in Syria could not be solved through military actions.

The Syrian city of Aleppo has become a battleground for a conflict between the Syrian government, several opposition factions and Islamist terrorist groups.
