In an interview with Sputnik, political expert and professor at the Kielce University, Kazimierz Kik, said that Poland should maintain dialogue with Russia and avoid becoming a hostage of the conflict between Washington and Moscow.

Poland Stands for Cooperation With Russia Without Preliminary Conditions
Last week, media reports cited a source in US intelligence saying that Russia was deploying Iskander-M mobile missile systems in Kaliningrad, Russia's enclave bordering Poland and Lithuania. The move raised concerns among the Eastern European countries, with Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski calling it an "inadequate response."

According to Kik, the US "is flexing its muscles" by bringing NATO forces to the Russian border. If Poland will further be involved in this process and allow the deployment of the additional NATO forces on its territory, then it shouldn't be surprised to watch Russian Iskander systems moving close to its eastern borders.

Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over the creation of the ballistic missile defense system in Europe, approved in 2010 during a NATO summit in Lisbon. A group of European countries, including Poland, Romania, Spain and Turkey, agreed to deploy elements of the system on their territories.

"If Poland would pursue a policy that will make the Polish security dependent on the rivalry between the US and Russia, in this case, Poland will lose control over its own security and give it into the hands of the conflict beyond its capabilities and control," Kik told Sputnik.

According to the expert, European countries should act according to their national interests and cooperate with Russia, rather than engage in confrontation with it.

"In my opinion, we lack unity and common ways of thinking on our eastern direction, and in particular, the unity between Poland and Russia. It doesn't mean that we, Poles, should literally unite ourselves with Russia. The idea is to act according to our national interests and the needs of integrating Europe. And I remind you that one of the main requirements of integrating Europe is to use every opportunity to strengthen Europe, primarily economically. There is no possibility for Europe to become an independent, autonomous entity on the global stage without cooperation with Russia," the expert concluded.
