France drafted a UN Security Council resolution on Syria to provoke Russia to use its veto power and therefore aggravate the situation and ratchet up the anti-Russia rhetoric, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

Hollande Slams Russia's Veto of France's UNSC Resolution on Syria
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Saturday, Russia blocked the French draft UN Security Council resolution on the cessation of hostilities in Syria's northern city of Aleppo. The document received 11 votes in support, two votes against (Russia and Venezuela), while two more members of the Security Council abstained (China and Angola).

"[The resolution was created] to achieve this veto. But why? To aggravate the situation, ratchet up the anti-Russia rhetoric in controlled media, lying to their population and citizens," Putin said at the "Russia Calling!" forum.

The president added that Russia cherished its relations with France, and called on Paris to not be offended over Moscow’s forewarned veto.
