Attempts by Turkey to seek to revise the country's borders with Greece are contradictory to international law and are unacceptable in Europe, the Greek Foreign Ministry said.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Turkey and Greece have yet not reached an agreement on a maritime border between the two countries in the Aegean Sea yet as the dispute over several islands and cliffs remains unsettled.

Border Dispute Between Turkey, Greece Remains Unresolved

"Some people in our neighboring country want to lead Turkey against international law, which is under no circumstance acceptable for a European country. Revisionist policies have always led to negative consequences and defeats," the Greek Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry rejected Turkey's claims of continued negotiations with Greece over the territorial disputes, stressing that only continental shelf boundaries have been discussed by the two sides.

On Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the post-World War I Lausanne Treaty, saying it was forced on Turkey by its opponents. He added that Turkey ceded islands with Turkish sanctuaries and mosques to Greece under the treaty.

The Aegean dispute has been a major source of tension between Greece and Turkey since the 1970s, bringing the two countries to the brink of military confrontation in 1987 and 1996. The dispute revolves around a set of issues involving the delimitation of territorial waters, airspace, demilitarized zones and the status several Aegean Sea islands.

Talks to resolve the issue began after 1999, when Turkey agreed to resolve the bilateral dispute as part of its accession deal with the European Union.
