Obama, Merkel Urge Both Sides of Ukraine Conflict to Abide by Ceasefire

US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed in a phone call on Thursday the urgency for both sides of the conflict in Ukraine to adhere to the cessation of hostilities, the White House said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier exchanged views on the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the situation in Syria.

“Both leaders urged the parties to continue respecting the cease-fire, begin the disengagement of forces along the line of contact as quickly as possible, and provide international monitors unfettered access to the entire conflict zone,” the release stated on Thursday.

Obama, the release continued, expressed strong support for the ongoing efforts of the Normandy Group to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
