ANKARA (Sputnik) — Johnson's statement came after on June 23 UK citizens voted to leave the European Union, with a necessity arising to strike new free trade deals as a non-EU member.

"What I hope for is a jumbo free trade deal between the United Kingdom and Turkey," Johnson said at a press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, as quoted by the BBC.

Johnson also noted that although the United Kingdom was leaving the European Union, it was not leaving Europe. Having voted to leave the bloc, Britain will be able to negotiate its own trade deals with other countries, the foreign secretary said.

Turkey is not a member of the European Union, but has a longstanding ambition to join the bloc and has a customs union agreement with it.
