Hollande Lays the Blame for ‘Chaos’ in Syria on Supporters of Damascus

French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday laid the blame for the fighting in Syria on countries supporting the Syrian legitimate government, in a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and terrorist groups, including Daesh and al-Nusra Front.

"I would say to its [Syrian government’s] foreign supporters that they need to compel the regime’s hand to peace. If not, they will also, alongside the regime, bear responsibility for the division and chaos in Syria," the French leader said.

Hollande urged the United Nations and the UN Security Council to take responsibility for the settlement of the long-standing conflict in Syria and the international fight against terrorism.

Hollande urged the UN Security Council on Tuesday to hold a meeting on Syria as soon as possible amid faltering ceasefire.

"The Security Council should meet as soon as possible. It should not be a theater for fools, in other words, a place where each evades their responsibility and where some impede the work of the Security Council for, as they put it, reasons to protect the regime that should itself be seeking the solution with us."
