WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A bipartisan group of US senators is planning to introduce a resolution on Wednesday that objects to US arms sales to Saudi Arabia, Senator Rand Paul said Monday at the Center for the National Interest, a Washington, DC think tank.
"This resolution will say to the president that we disapprove of the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia," stated Paul, a Republican who represents the US state of Kentucky.
Wednesday’s action is to be a "privileged resolution," whereby lawmakers submit an item for consideration without going through the leadership of a legislative chamber.
He said the resolution will be both introduced and voted on Wednesday.
Even if US President Barack Obama vetoes the measure or the US House of Representatives fails to act, Paul said the legislation will elevate the debate over Saudi arms sales to include Congress.
US military sales to Saudi Arabia have drawn bipartisan opposition, in part because US-made bombs have been used by the Saudi-led coalition to attack hospitals and other civilian targets in neighboring Yemen, according to multiple eyewitness and published reports.
