Beijing called on Seoul and Pyongyang to avoid all provocations and urged a prudent approach to the issue following North Korea's fresh nuclear test, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Friday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, North Korea said it had carried out the fifth nuclear test, believed to be the largest since the country started to pursue nuclear programs in violation of UN resolutions. The country announced that it was capable of mounting nuclear warheads on "strategic ballistic rockets."

"We believe that all sides' security concerns may be dealt with only in a way acceptable for everyone. We urge the sides to have a prudent approach and avoid provoking each other, to jointly seek denuclearization and maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," Hua said at a briefing.

Earlier in the day, South Korea, Japan and the United states called on the United Nations to hold a crisis meeting to address North Korea’s nuclear ambition. The emergency meeting of the UN Security Council is expected to take place later on Friday.
