The European Union intends to develop partnership relations with the United Kingdom after the country leaves the bloc, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Sunday.

HANGZHOU (Sputnik) — On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

"Britain remains our close partner. We want to put into place relations inspired by partnership, not any kind of revenge," Juncker told reporters prior to the opening of G20 summit in Hangzhou.

The G20 summit takes place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou on September 4-5.
