The Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN’s) Summit in Sochi gave a strong impetus to develop the dialogue between Russia and the Association, a statement by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, read out at a plenary session of the Russia–ASEAN University Forum in Russia's Vladivostok on Friday, said.

RUSSKY ISLAND (Sputnik) – ASEAN comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. The Russia-ASEAN summit was held in the Russian resort city of Sochi in May.

"The Sochi summit has given a strong impetus to build multi-faceted dialogue with ASEAN. For the first time in history, the ten leaders gathered on the Russian territory, we see this as recognition of the constructive role of Russia in the affairs of the Asia-Pacific region, in ensuring its security, stability and economic development," Lavrov’s statement said, as read out by Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.

According to the statement, the cooperation with ASEAN “has been firmly entrenched among the key foreign policy priorities" of Russia.

"Our dialogue is aimed at achieving political results," the statement added.
