Contact Group on Ukraine Agrees on Need to Extend Donbass Ceasefire

The Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine agreed on the need to extend the ceasefire in Donbass that came into force Thursday and called on the sides to the conflict to continue adhering to the cessation of violence, the spokeswoman to Ukraine’s envoy to the group said.

KIEV (Sputnik) – The September 1 ceasefire regime was announced at the Contact Group’s meeting in Minsk last Friday, August 26.

"The Trilateral Contact Group agreed on the need to continue the silence regime agreement and called on the parties to comply with this regime in the future. The parties recognized the need to continue efforts to ensure that the ceasefire acquires sustainability," Leonid Kuchma’s spokeswoman Darya Olifer wrote on Facebook.

She pointed out that the three sides noted that the cessation was generally holding up on the first day of the new school year.

The Trilateral Contact Group, consisting of envoys and experts from Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), hold regular meetings in Minsk aimed at facilitating a diplomatic resolution to the armed conflict in Donbass.
