The upcoming informal EU summit in Bratislava will be the first step in drafting the bloc's response to Brexit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — She added that the UK-EU divorce is a challenge for Europe that requires a complex solution.

"Bratislava is a message rather than a summit that will make a decision, it is a kick-off point," Merkel was quoted as saying by Phoenix broadcaster, at a joint press conference with the Visegrad Group prime ministers in Warsaw.

"The walkout of the United Kingdom from the European Union is not a single event, it is a deep cut in the history of EU integration, and that is why it is important to work out thoroughly the right response to this deep cut," Merkel said.

The Slovakian capital will host the meeting of the leaders of the EU member states, except UK Prime Minister Theresa May, on September 16. The participants are set to discuss the future of the bloc in light of the United Kingdom’s decision to withdraw from it, following the June 23 referendum on the issue.
