TOKYO (Sputnik) — According to Kyodo news agency, the sides could discuss strengthening bilateral ties, including potential investment Japanese companies could make in Cuba's economy.
The government source, cited by the agency, added that the visit would coincide with Abe's attendance of the UN General Assembly in New York City.
Japan's interest in the development of relations with Cuba grew after in 2015 the United States and Cuba resumed diplomatic relations, which had been severed since 1961. In May 2015, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida paid a visit to Havana in the first trip by a Japanese official to the island nation.
