The European Union called on Pyongyang to halt missile tests, refrain from increasing tensions and engage into a dialogue with the international community.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union on Wednesday urged North Korea to halt all missile launches and fully comply with its international obligations after Pyongyang launched two ballistic missile earlier in the day, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.

"The DPRK [North Korea] must halt all missile launches using ballistic missile technology and fully comply with all its international obligations. This latest action by the DPRK will serve no purpose other than heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula and threaten the peace and security of the wider region," the statement reads.

The EU service also reiterated its calls for North Korea to refrain from any further violations that could increase tensions and urged it to engage into a dialogue with the international community.

The South Korean military estimates that North Korea has carried out more than 30 ballistic tests since Kim Jong Un came into power in 2011.

Kim pledged to continue the country's ballistic and nuclear buildup until the United States has abandoned its plans for military reinforcement in South Korea and has agreed to sign a peace deal with North Korea to replace the ceasefire reached after the Korean War of 1950-1953.
