Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the importance of a strong US-UK relationship with new British Prime Minister Theresa May during their first official meeting, State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Kerry is currently in London for multilateral meetings on crises resolution in both Yemen and Syria, according to the State Department.

May took over as prime minister last week following David Cameron's resignation after a majority of the British public voted in favor of leaving the European Union in a nationwide referendum.

The "Special Relationship" is a phrase used to describe the exceptionally close political, diplomatic, cultural, economic, military and historical relations between the United Kingdom and the United States following its use in a 1946 speech by British statesman Winston Churchill.

Although both the United Kingdom and United States have close ties with many other nations, the level of cooperation between them in economic activity, trade and commerce, military planning, execution of military operations, nuclear weapons technology, and intelligence sharing has been described as "unparalleled".
