WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earnest was speaking after emphasizing that US President Barack Obama would urge Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to practice restraint and respect democratic safeguards during his current crackdown after last Friday’s failed military coup.
"Even where they haven't had a democratically elected government they have been members of NATO. That is a relevant fact," Earnest told the daily White House press briefing.
Earnest said the partnership between the two countries as NATO members and in fighting mutual security threats, especially from Daesh and other Islamist movements, remained strong and was expected to continued, despite Friday’s failed coup attempt.
"The United States strongly values our relationship with our NATO ally Turkey. There is no good reason why that close coordination and working relationship should not continue into the future."
The two countries continued to conduct "a lot of business" to their mutual benefit, he added.
