Finland is a priority partner to Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday, while on an official visit to the country.

TURKU (Sputnik) — Putin added that Russia maintains stable political contacts and active trade with Finland.

"I would like to stress one more time that we consider Finland to be our priority partner. Our ties are truly based on the solid foundation of friendship and good neighborly relations," Putin said at a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto.

In March, Niinisto visited Moscow to discuss Russian-Finnish relations in the areas of trade, culture and cross-border cooperation.

The Finnish president said that he had held a very interesting and constructive meeting with Putin.

"We held a very interesting and constructive conversation. And the fact that we intend to continue talks at the dinner is telling of the volume of our bilateral issues," Niinisto said at a joint press conference in the southwestern Finnish city of Turku.

Putin expressed hope, on his part, that Moscow and Helsinki would continue constructive negotiations during a wide-format meeting.
