The political crises in the United Kingdom triggered by Brexit will act as a deterrent against a domino effect in the European Union, persuading other countries from leaving, European Parliament member for Austria Barbara Kappel said Wednesday.

'Domino Effect' Caused by Brexit Could Decimate the EU
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — She added that despite 40 percent of Austrians supporting a Brexit-style referendum, it is not going to happen anytime soon.

"If we look at the Great Britain closely, we will see that the country is destabilized, the government cannot function properly, Scotland and Northern Ireland are considering leaving the United Kingdom, thus the referendum brought many problems without solution. I think that this will act as an example of how not to do and one should not expect a domino effect," Kappel told the broadcaster RT in an interview.

The European Union must concentrate on reforms to provide national governments with more powers, Kappel noted.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
