Russia is ready to back New Delhi's bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group thanks to India's "impeccable reputation" in the field of nuclear non-proliferation.

TASHKENT (Sputnik) – Russia is ready to support India’s bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) because of its track record as a non-proliferator of nuclear technology, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"Given that India has an impeccable reputation of a country that has never been a source of proliferation of nuclear technology, we are ready to support it [India’s NSG membership]," Lavrov said.

The Russian diplomat forecast that India’s as well as Pakistan’s prospects of joining the NSG would come "as soon as consensus will be reached."
