The exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union means Sweden is about to lose one of its key partners in the bloc, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

"The people of the UK had a great deal to gain by remaining in the EU. Sweden is losing an important partner in the EU," Lofven said in a statement published by the Swedish government.

Earlier in the day, European Council President Donald Tusk said that he had invited 27 EU leaders to discuss Brexit next week without the participation of the United Kingdom on the sidelines of the European Council summit.

According to Tusk, the European Union regrets the United Kingdom's decision to exit, but the necessary procedures are in place for this to happen.
